POST OF THE DAY, JULY 2ND 2020

July 1, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“I define anxiety as experiencing failure in advance.” – Seth Godin

It’s not abnormal to feel the nerves before something big. We have a several thousand year-old survival mechanism that wants to protect us. A bit outdated maybe, but it’s still alive and well.

This made sense when being chased by predators, or at risk of running out of food. Yet, our day to day actions are different now. Not only do we not need to prepare for catastrophic failure… we should resist it.

What we think, we will become. And if we dwell on the thought on failing, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. We start to focus in, on a subconscious level, on the reasons we will fail. Of course, we’re not in an imaginary world here… we will fail… but it’s the paradigm shift we’re after. Think less about all the reasons we’ll fail, and more, about all the reasons we will succeed.

WORKOUT OF THE DAY, JULY 3RD 2020

July 2, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.” – James Clear

If someone has 10 coins, are they rich? Let’s say no.
What if they have 100 coins. Probably not.
What about 1,000 coins?

There is a tipping point. A number where our answer changes to yes. It actually narrows down to a single coin where that takes place.

But… we know it wasn’t *just* the single coin. It was the culmination of the many before. We can apply this same logic to our identity. By itself, walking the shopping cart back to its home isn’t going to change who we are as an individual. By itself, picking up trash outside of the local school isn’t going to either. It’s the culmination, that will. These votes for who we are, seemingly small at the time, add up.

A pitfall in life is when we view instances throughout our day as insignificant. We tell ourselves, “this won’t make a difference”. Yet at the end of the day, just like the single coin, it’s all that matters.

July 5, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

MAHALO FOR A GREAT MUSCLES AND MIMOSAS!   HOPE EVERYONE HAD A SAFE 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND!

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Even if the world was going to fall to pieces tomorrow… I’m still going to plant my apple tree.” - Martin Luther King Jr

Values define us… not conditions. Every alarm in the world may be sounding off, but when it comes down to it, only we decide the actions we will take.

We can stand by, and wait for life to happen to us. Or we can choose to believe that we have a say in our own story... that we are the writers of our script. That we have ownership over what happens next.

Circumstances change, but values are forever.

WORKOUT OF THE DAY, JULY 7TH 2020

July 6, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

"For most of us, the problem is not a lack of goals. But rather too many of them.” – Roy F. Baumeister

Goal setting can be exciting. We all love doing it… thinking about the future. To plan, visualize, and dream. It’s arguably a major strength of ours, as there rarely ever is a shortage we can list off.

The quote brings to light that this strength is however a double-edged sword. For we can create so many goals that we actually dilute our focus. And dilute our time and effort. It’s not that some aren’t important to us, but… if everything is important, then nothing is important.

Less can be more. In the words of Confucius, “Person who chases two rabbits, catches neither”.

WORKOUT OF THE DAY, JULY 8TH 2020

July 8, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth.” – Kurt Vonnegut

It can be easy to forget that even the greats are full of awkwardness and clumsiness. Yet the man quoted above is known to have changed the face of American literature.

But despite Vonnegut’s success, he didn’t start that way. It was full of fumbles, false starts, and embarrassing mistakes. Yet where others in his shoes stopped, he chose to keep going. Forcing himself to move forward. He kept taking one more step, even when the process did not seem rewarding.

Awkward and clumsy is not just OK… it’s part of the way.

WORKOUT OF THE DAY, JULY 10TH 20220

July 9, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Our patience will achieve more than our force.” - Edmund Burke

We are emotional beings. And we can only be rational, after we’ve been emotional.

When we see someone who is composed under adversity, it’s not that they aren’t an emotional person. Those feelings are there. What’s different (compared to the explosive nature of a “hot head”) is the closing of a certain gap. That of between an emotional reaction, and the subsequent replacement of rational thought.

Abraham Lincoln exercised this understanding through his “hot letters”. When he became fuming mad at someone, he forced himself to complete a task before taking his wrath directly to the individual. He wrote a letter to the offender, outlining all the wrongs and misdoings that have been committed. He held nothing back. Then, he would fold it up, place the letter in an envelope, place it in his desk drawer, and... never send it.

Think through the last time we lost our temper on someone. Was it worth it? Emotions will cool. And we can proceed in a more reasonable fashion that we won’t regret. We just need to acknowledge that gap, and work ourselves there through patience.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 13TH 2020

July 12, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

Aloha LCF Ohana!  Here's to another great week of fitness and fun with friends.

Our Ohana is growing so to accomodate we are going to add a 9am CrossFit Class Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting next week - July 20th. (We will still have Open Gym at 9am but our class will take priority regarding space and equipment).

We will update our schedule on the website, send out a text reminder and put reminders for your all on our social media platforms.

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“If you can’t fly, then run. If you can run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King Jr

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld had a daily practice, which was a promise to himself. To “never break the chain”.

Every day, Jerry promised himself that he would write a joke, every single day. The length, the topic, and even how funny it was came second to the fact - that it was completed. Some days the jokes were incredibly funny. Other days, hardly. Some jokes were long, some were barely a sentence. But he “never broke the chain”.

What Jerry was doing, was committing himself to make forward movement, every, single, day. Some days it was inch, and some days it was a mile. And this seemingly simple practice, to place tangible action into every day, resulted in one of the greatest comedians of his time.

As Martin Luther expresses, it’s not about the magnitude of the progress. All that matters, is that we’re moving forward.

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.”

Although “knowledge” and “wisdom” are words often lumped into the same category, they are miles apart. The difference between the two: application.

Gaining knowledge, in and of itself, is relatively simple. But purely gaining knowledge doesn’t change who we are. We can place a turbocharged engine under the hood, but it’s not connected to the drivetrain, we won’t drive faster. We might even drive slower, clouding our efforts with “unusable weight”.

Wisdom on the other hand, takes effort. It takes trial, error, pain, blood, sweat, and tears. And it’s a lifelong practice.

Knowing is not half the battle. It’s not even a quarter. It’s the first 10%, if that. What we are after, is knowledge in action.

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Never confuse movement, with action” - Ernest Hemingway

“Busy work” is our mortal enemy.

“Movement” here refers to taking care of the pressing and loud items in our day. The emails. The text messages. The bills. Parts that need to be done eventually, but are *seemingly* far more urgent in the moment than they are in reality. For at the days end, as we climb into bed, the days that were consumed with such busy work leave us feeling the least fulfilled. “What the hell did I do today?”

This is because “movement” does not push us towards our goals. Only action does. Action is premeditated effort, driven by purpose. It’s calculated energy, versus reactive “movement”. It’s swimming forward, versus treading water.

This quote urges us to recognize the difference between the two. Are we are we in motion, or are we in action?

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Creativity is allowing one to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” - Scott Adams

We all want to create something amazing in this life. A successful career, building a deep relationship, to anything and everything between. In this process, we easily forget how crucial it is to allow ourselves to make mistakes.

We learn after mistakes, no question about that, but there’s something even more important here - the *will* to try so hard, that we make mistakes. If we are living in a state of fear, that we’ll fumble the ball or miss the chance… we never take the risk. We move through life on safe.

Just like training for a 200lb snatch, we wouldn’t expect to be able to lift the weight on Day 1. We’d start at a lighter load, steadily building over the weeks. Countless misses and technical faults along the way, but we still come back to try once more. Fine tuning, until we’ve reached our “art”.

July 16, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.” - Dr Suess

Words from a childrens’ book, but words that reach far beyond.

It’s easy to get caught up in “life”.
To be so focused on chasing our next goal. Hunting that next accomplishment.

Dr Suess gives us a grounding thought: to value the present. To appreciate the moments in front of us, despite how tempting it may be to look ahead. In today’s world, we’re moving faster than ever. Planning more than ever. Forecasting more than ever. But in all the plans that we could possibly dream up, regardless of how big and audacious as they may be, do not create memories. Only today can.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 20TH 2020

July 19, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDESET:

“The opposite of play is not work. The opposite of play is depression.” – Brene Brown

Sometimes along the way, we forget that we love what we do. The choice of words there was intentional.

Suddenly things become a “job”.
Things used to be fun.
It used to excite us.
Now… not so much.
And we ask ourselves that question… ”What happened?”

When we are here, it’s a must to remind ourselves: love is a two-way street. And it takes work to love. Unlike the portrayal in the movies, there’s commitment with hard work, sweat and tears. But through that, if we can see it all the way, is the irreplaceable fulfillment. We must learn, or maybe better said re-learn, to love what we do.

Think back to what excited us the most when we started. What ignited the fire. What wakes us up in the morning. It’s there. Not lost to “work”, and just in need of a rekindling.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 22ND 2020

July 21, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Motivation can get you started. Commitment is what keeps you going.” - Jim Rohn

Motivation feels good.
It makes things feel, just, easy. So natural.

We recognize anything in life that’s worth working towards… won’t be easy. And it will not be a matter of if, but when, we are challenged and tested to the core. In this moment, motivation may very well not be there for us. What will be however, is our commitment.

Our success can be drawn back to the level of commitment to the little things. "Discipline" is not reserved for the military or martial arts - it is our anchor for seeing us through the storm. It won't be a single action that makes, or breaks us. It’s instead hundreds and thousands of smaller decisions, repeated time and time again, through the dedicated commitment to discipline ourselves.

Let's be aware of the habits and commitments we hold ourselves to. Whereas motivation is a short-term fix, commitments to daily healthy habits guide us through the inevitable storms.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 23RD 2020

July 22, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Head, Heart, Hands.” - Jim Kwik

Every action originates as a thought in our head. But from there, thoughts of course don’t just materialize into existence in front of us. It doesn’t go “head to hands”. There’s a step between that decides if it’s going to actually happen: heart.

It’s the emotional connection. Our level of buy-in. We could have the most grandiose plan of all time, but if we aren’t bought in with our heart in full… we know it will never work.

It’s less about what we’re doing, and more about why we’re doing it. Our success is less about “which path”, and more about the level of commitment we bring to it.

As we move through our day, let’s consider this concept of Head, Heart, Hands. If we find ourselves struggling with something… a specific career, a relationship, a lifestyle… what is causing it? Are we bought in?

Head, Heart, Hands.
Our reasons are what will reap our results.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 24TH 2020

July 23, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“The Marshmallow Experiment”

The experiment conducted decades ago began by bringing in children into a room, one by one, sitting them down in a chair with a single marshmallow in front of them.

Here, the researcher offered a deal. He said he was going to leave the room, and if the child didn’t eat the marshmallow while he was away, then a second marshmallow would be rewarded. However, if the child chose to eat the marshmallow while he was away, they wouldn’t get a second. What he didn’t say was how long he’d be gone. The choice was simple - one treat now, or two treats later.

Some of the children ate it right away. Some squirmed around for a bit, and gave in after a couple of minutes. And some of the children managed to wait until the researcher came back.

The research team followed the participants for 40 years afterwards. The children who ate the marshmallow immediately... struggled in life. They didn’t have careers they were proud of, and they didn’t live lives they were happy with. The children who held out went on to live as highly successful individuals.

The ability to delay gratification is a critical component in life. Whether we want to go to the CrossFit Games, be the best spouse we can be, or propel our career forward, we must have the willpower to stay the course with the longer term in mind. Even when we’re tired, hungry, beat up, and starving for a bite of that marshmallow… we’re tough enough to hang on.

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Empathy fuels connection. Sympathy drives disconnection.” - Brene Brown

Sympathy is feeling “sorry” for someone. And although these intentions often come from a good place, it actually further isolates the individual. It creates a deeper divide.

Empathy, on the other hand, is free of judgement. It’s being an sincere listener, present for the individual in relation… but not “diagnosis”. Instead of being there to fix you, it’s being there with you.

Rarely can a response make something better. What can make something better, is connection.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 28TH 2020

July 27, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“I’ll either find a way, or I’ll make one.” – Hannibal

Said by a man who got elephants to climb a mountain.

Angela Duckworth, a leading expert on the study of “grit”, defines it as follows:

“Passion and sustained persistence applied towards long-term achievement, with no particular concern for rewards or recognition along the way.”

If there is a single attribute that is the closest correlate to success, it may very well be grit.

Grit is very much in line with our definition of “mental toughness”. To give our unconditional best, regardless of the circumstances.

It’s doing the unsexy hard work... when no one’s watching.
It’s refusing to see a “failure” as “defeat”.
It’s refusing to believe that elephants can’t climb mountains… and then proving it.

We look to the past not to seek out what is possible. We look to the past to study ways that have worked before.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 29TH 2020

July 28, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle

One of the most challenging things we can do, is to reflect. To reflect, with brutal honesty.

This quote can be applied in many ways, but it’s most commonly applied to the physical acts of our days. Whether we show up to the gym at 5:30am to train. Whether we eat the proper food we brought to work with us, or order out for lunch.

What’s more challenging, is to look further inward. And reflect, with brutal honesty, on our thoughts. The way we think.

When we missed the lift, what were our immediate thoughts?
When we were cut off on the road by another car, what did we say to ourselves?
When the gossip arrived in the locker room, what did we first think?

If our thoughts become actions, this must be where we start.

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“Pursue one great decisive aim with force and determination.” – Carls Von Karlswich

Choice is one of the most powerful things we have as human beings.
But hiding in that power, is also one of the most destructive forces imaginable.

Ironically enough, the missing link to accomplishing that “thing”, is choice… specifically, the lack of it.

A different thought process from the quote above, is to stop trying to do everything.

To be able to stand in a room with a thousand doors, and be able to close 999 of them.

Are we trying to do too much? Sometimes less truly can be more.

POST OF THE DAY, JULY 31ST 2020

July 31, 2020 | LAHAINA CROSSFIT

LCF/COMPTRAIN MINDSET:

“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” – Malcolm X

There’s something intoxicating about planning for the future. It’s the dream-world.

Yet when it comes time to cross the bridge from planning to execution, many lose their way. And nothing materializes.

View preparation as two parts, equally theoretical and tangible action.
Without the thought behind, it’s wasted energy in multiple directions.
And without action to follow thought, it’s nothing but a pipe dream.

There will be the voice that tells us, “there’s time to do this tomorrow”. But that brings us back to the quote we started with above. Are we going to react to tomorrow, or are we going to respond to today?
